Puppy Pre-School

  Carnegie Veterinary Clinic

For those who have a new puppy or are thinking of getting a new puppy we strongly recommend Puppy Pre-School. Having a socialised well behaved puppy is a must for any owner especially as dogs live for a long time and that is a very long and stressful time to have an unruly companion.

When a puppy attends Puppy Pre-School it socialises them with the practice, with other people, with children and with other puppies. People may say my puppy is fine at home but in some cases you take a puppy or dog out of their comfort zone and it is a different story. That is why, from an early age, you need to expose them to many different situations to prevent fear throughout their lives. This results in a happy and relaxed dog.

    Introduction to Puppy Pre-school

Puppy Pre-school is a must for any owner wanting a well-behaved and well socialised companion. The primary aim of Puppy Pre-school is socialisation. Your companion can be taught commands such as ‘sit’ and ‘stay’ at a slightly later stage, and while we will be covering this important part of training, the real emphasis will be on building confidence for the puppies and learning appropriate social skills with people and other animals.

    Booking for the classes

Four x 1 hour classes are conducted on a weekday night at 7:00pm. Full course notes and a puppy-food pack are kindly supplied by the sponsors of the day. We ask that for the first class, puppy and owner arrive 15 minutes early to enrol and settle in.

    What will be covered?

Puppy classes are run by our Registered Veterinary Nurse, Amber, who uses the positive reinforcement method to cover the topics outlined below.

    Who should attend?

The ideal age for puppies starting classes is 8-12 weeks. Pups are also of a similar behavioural development at this time. Puppies 8-14 weeks of age are in the critical period for socialisation in which a small amount of experience can lead to significant long lasting effects on behaviour. It is ideal if some children attend the classes. This allows socialisation for those puppies that are not in a household with children. However, as we have limited space, we ask that a maximum of two people per puppy attend the classes.

What do you need to bring?

So, you have made the excellent decision to bring your puppy to pre-school. Along with your puppy on a lead, you will be required to bring their vaccination certificate, and it’s a good idea to refrain from feeding your companion a full meal prior to arrival.

    Before your puppy starts school

It is important that all puppies attending Puppy Pre-School have a current and proven vaccination history. If you are unsure as to whether or not your puppy has been immunised, please ask reception for further advice.

For bookings please call one of our friendly staff on: 9563 5422.

Look forward to seeing you at Puppy Pre-School.     Amber
